Research on joint pain relief has been a common interest particularly among elderly groups. Joint pain may be caused by several factors including injury to the ligaments, tendons, cartilage and joints. However, one of the causes of joint pain among older people is osteoarthritis.

For several years, there has been a continuous debate on the efficiency of using joint supplements in alleviating the symptoms of osteoarthritis and joint pain. Specifically, two joint supplements namely, Chondroitin and Glucosamine are still undergoing further studies.

 Although some of the respondents of the studies claim to have experienced joint pain relief with these two ingredients, it still is not proven whether these two are suited for primary treatment of osteoarthritis.

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance in the body which is made up of amino acid. This substance is a forerunner to a molecule which is very essential in the formation and repair of cartilage. As a supplement, the recommended dosage is 1500 mg daily for one to two months.

Glucosamine is given to patients based on the theory that by orally consuming the supplement, this may give rise to faster formation of cartilage and help in the rebuild of damaged cartilage. The downside, however, is that this substance could have the following side effects:

  • may trigger allergic reactions in some people
  • could cause blood sugar fluctuations in diabetics
  • gastrointestinal discomforts and other side-effects if taken beyond the recommended dosage.

Chondroitin, on the other hand, is a substance that is responsible for the flexibility of the joint cartilage. Its mechanism of action is found it its protective property on the bone cartilage. By using Chondroitin, you can halt the damaging effect of an enzyme which destroys the cartilage.

The recommended dosage of Chondroitin is 800mg daily (400 mg two times a day) for a span of one to four months. In order to complement the therapeutic effect on joint repair, these two joint supplements are usually taken together - or in a specific mixed form. The side effects of Chondroitin for some people include:

  • gastric disturbances such as nausea,
  • indigestion, diarrhea and
  • abdominal pain.

Some joint pain relievers will include ingredients that will help prevent or lessen side effects (such as Vitamin C). 

Each person is different, and if you suffer from any of these symptoms, you need to discontinue use immediately.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin have been used for years as "joint supplements" and have proven to be excellent joint pain relievers for many people. However, because each person reacts differently to whatever they put into their body, it's always safer to check with your physician before starting the supplements or including them in the current treatment of osteoarthritis.

At the very least, if you start using joint supplements for joint pain relief, be sure to tell your physician that you have added them into your diet so he doesn't prescribe something that will lessen their affect.
